Why is my Jewelry Tarnishing?
Why is my Jewelry Tarnishing?
This is a normal and unavoidable part of owning jewelry. Most precious metals are prone to tarnish, some more rapidly than others. Tarnish is a reaction caused by the interaction of oxygen, moisture and metal over time. Reactions to your body's PH levels, the medications you may be taking or the care products you use, may accelerate the process. However, with proper handling and storage, you can reduce the likelihood of tarnish.
To help prevent tarnish, avoid contact with lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, cleaning agents, and hand sanitizers. Keep your jewelry away from all moisture, and store in an air-tight bag, away from sunlight. An anti-tarnish bag or velvet wrap is provided with your purchase.
Please see The Care Instructions for more information.
How do I clean my Jewelry?
How do I clean my Jewelry?
A polishing cloth is provided with each purchase, to maintain the luster of your jewelry and remove minor tarnishing. Polish gently and avoid using the cloth in any areas with applied blackening agents, because the cloth can remove these finishes.
If you are unable to clean the piece with your cloth due to considerable tarnish, I offer free cleaning of all Zed|Eh Design pieces once a year. Simply pay the cost of shipping, and I will bring your piece back to its original shine without damaging the jewelry. Email me at support@zedehdesigns.com to book a cleaning.
Please note: Do not use any silver polish, jewelry dips, ultrasonics, baking soda, ketchup, oven bakes or other products and methods to clean your jewelry. These can all create permanent damage to your jewelry. Use of these materials or processes will void all repair guarantees and cleaning offers. Jewelry should only be cleaned by a professional in your area or by me directly.
See The Care Instructions for more information on how to look after your jewelry.
How should I store my jewelry?
How should I store my jewelry?
Store your jewelry in an air-tight bag made of anti-tarnish material, or with anti-tarnish strips. Keep your jewelry away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not store your jewelry in the bathroom or other high moisture environments.
An anti-tarnish bag is provided with each purchase. Bags are effective for 3 years, or until the colour fades. If your piece is too large to fit in an anti-tarnish bag, it will be wrapped in a heavy, velvet, anti-tarnish cloth.
Please see The Care Instructions for more information.
What is a Made-To-Order piece?
What is a Made-To-Order piece?
Most pieces by Zed|Eh Designs are one-of-a-kind designs, fabricated once and never made again. Select pieces are available and noted as "Made-To-Order." These designs are fabricated upon request and can be made multiple times. They remain unique because they are handmade, however the base design can be replicated.
Order fulfillment is 10 business days to allow time for fabrication, unless otherwise indicated. You will receive an email once the piece is completed, and the order is shipped. There are no returns on made-to-order pieces.
What metals do you work with?
What metals do you work with?
I work in fine silver, sterling silver and 18K bi-metal.
Fine silver (.999) is 99% pure silver. This metal is much more resistant to tarnish than sterling and fuses beautifully. However, it is also quite soft, scratches easily and not suited for structural pieces. I will often use fine silver for bezel setting stones, balling metal, creating textures and making large, twisted chains.
Sterling silver (.925) consists of 92.5% fine silver and 7.5% alloy of other metals, usually copper. Some alloys can also include zinc, germanium, platinum, etc. I frequently alloy my own silver, or purchase stock that uses a patented alloy with a small amount of germanium to improve tarnish resistance. Sterling is the precious metal you will most frequently see in high quality silver jewelry. It is robust, forms beautifully and can polish to an excellent finish. While it is more likely to tarnish, this natural patination can be desirable. Minimize tarnish with proper care and maintenance.
Gold bi-metal is made by bonding a layer of gold to a layer of sterling silver, creating a sheet with two distinct precious metal surfaces. It is available in 18K and 22K gold. Unlike gold-fill jewelry that covers a base metal (usually brass or copper), gold bi-metal is made entirely of precious metals, significantly increasing the value of the piece. The layer of gold on 18K and 22K bimetal is also substantially thicker (5% and 13% respectively) than keum boo (0.02 microns), plating (0.5 microns), or vermeil (2.5 microns). Bi-metal can be used in a wide range of ways such as printing, forming, texturing, polishing and soldering. Bi-metal is an excellent way to bring in the warmth, contrast and shine of gold elements, without the cost of solid gold.
What material are your Ear Wires/Posts made from?

Why don't you use purity stamps on your jewelry?
Why don't you use purity stamps on your jewelry?
This is a hotly debated issue in the jewelry industry in the United States.
While laws govern the use of hallmarks and maker's marks in the Unites States, they are loosely enforced and often inconsistently interpreted. Unlike many countries such as the UK, metalsmiths are not required to submit each piece to a federal assay office, to have pieces assayed, legally stamped and catalogued. Instead, the purity stamps are readily available for purchase online, and can be easily used by anyone who chooses. These markings have been used to mislead customers and over-value subpar jewelry. As a result, the value of purity marks is questionable and a poor indicator of the quality of material. An assay office, jewelry artist, appraiser, buyer or refiner will acid test your jewelry to discover the materials rather than rely on stamps.
Since I focus on making one-of-a-kind art jewelry rather than fine jewelry, and I frequently mix precious metals, I limit my stamping to only maker's mark. This "signature" directly ties me to my work, as a guarantee and accountability for the quality of materials that I use.
Where is your jewelry made?
Where is your jewelry made?
Zed|Eh Designs jewelry is handmade, by me, in San Diego, CA. I often joke that my jewelry is Canadian designed & American made, as I hail from Ottawa, Canada.
Where did the name Zed|Eh Designs come from?
Where did the name Zed|Eh Designs come from?
First, it is a nod to my name (Zoé) and how it's pronounced. I come from a French-Canadian background and the E in my name has the French accent 'aigu' on it. It changes the E pronunciation to ā - so my name is said as: Z-oh-eh.
Second, is a playful acknowledgment of my Canadian heritage. Living in the United States, and spelling my name with Zed rather than Zee, has been a point of much confusion and humour. And of course, the great Canadian Eh!
Lastly, and more personally, the idea of moving from Z to A, rather than from A to Z, represents a kind of coming home to me. Through Zed|Eh Designs, I am finding my way back to myself.
How long have you been a silversmith?
How long have you been a silversmith?
I have been making jewelry for a decade now, taking my first fabrication class in Toronto, Canada at a small school called Jewel Envy. I soon moved to San Diego, CA and continued learning under master goldsmith Jay Whaley. For 6 years I honed my skills and, joined his teaching assistant team. I transitioned to independent work as covid hit in 2020, and in late 2021, I opened Zed|Eh Designs. In 2022, I embarked on a mentorship with notable jewelry artist Lesley Aine Mckeown, and continue to learn and grow as an artist.
