The idea for this necklace emerged as I reflected on issues of social injustice, listening to others’ experiences and examining my own. Themes of strength and vulnerability kept re-emerging and ultimately found shape in this substantial curb chain necklace. The centerpiece is a significant 3.5” hand-forged spear, worn prominently over the heart and represents the lasting impact of this struggle. Serving as the toggle that keeps the chain together, it’s a visually striking statement.
To contrast the fragility of the material with the strength and intensity of the design, the chain is hand fabricated entirely in pure silver. While bright and resistant to tarnish, pure silver is softer than sterling and can be more susceptible to blemishes and distortion. Yet, by using heavy links and manually hardening the chain, it is sturdy and resilient – poetically balanced between vulnerability and strength.

While offering a bright shine and resistance to tarnish, fine silver is a softer precious metal than sterling (92.5%) and more prone to scratches and dents. In this piece, the use of fine silver was a deliberate artistic choice to contrast the fragility of the material with the strength of the design, highlighting the power of vulnerability.
