The Story

A large statement necklace offering a reflection on our need to find community and the fragile infrastructure our lives are built upon. Each asymmetric square in the pendant represents an individual life within its small community, unique from the next, each with its own distinct qualities. Underneath, industrial textured bars form a grid, reminiscent of concrete and rebar, creating the precarious foundation upon which these lives are balanced. The gaps between the bars further reinforce feelings of instability, and the pervasive risk of disappearing between the cracks. Despite this, we see the lives clustered together in their smaller communities, as they gather and hold fast in a reality that is otherwise delicately balanced. They are strengthened in their connection and diversity, and create beauty and meaning as part of the greater whole.

An eye-catching piece, this contemporary necklace has been handcrafted in sterling and fine silver, as well as 18 karat gold bimetal. Several subtle fabrication techniques, including foldforming, fusing, hollowforms, riveting, and hinges – add depth, interest, and functionality to the piece. Despite providing the metaphor for precariousness, the grid structure is soundly fabricated, and reinforced by a sturdy frame. Textures on the piece have been oxidized for prominence and definition, complemented by a final complete polish that highlights the contrast. The collar has been attached to the pendant with hinges, ensuring a comfortable and natural fit on the décollatage. An additional connection along the collarbone allows for it to contour the neckline, and conclude in a simple square cable chain. The collar is fastened by a secure, hand fabricated spring clasp, bearing the Zed|Eh Designs logo.
